The distinctive feature of Raku firing is that the ceramics are rapidly heated to around 1000°C, then removed from the kiln with tongs and placed, still glowing, into wood shavings. The intense thermal shock and the reduction atmosphere within the shavings create the fine glaze cracks typical of the Raku technique. Gerald Pfaffl and Alexander Eselböck demonstrate this firing method in the courtyard of the university.
